From the large number of croatian islands (1185), Krk is the most famous and often called golden island. Located in Kvarner Bay, and because of this and the good Mediterranean climate, it is one of the most visited islands, and has received the name – cradle of croatian culture. Its neighboring islands are Cres , Rab and Goli Otok , and also several small islands. You can find diversity of beauty, flora and fauna, the highlands, lakes, and bays. Krk is known for its 1400 species of flora, which is half of the total number in Croatia. Endemic plant “Barbašova lazarkinja”, is found only on this island.
You can reach Krk by land – bridge, through the many sea ports or by airport in Rijeka, which is only 30 km away from the Krk. It is believed that Krk is connected with the number 7 – in the 7th century it was populated by Croats, it had been defended from pirates 7 times, Frankopan was the 7th governor, and also the last.
On the island you can visit monuments, museums, you can sail on the sea or you can reach wild mountain paths, or taste the local cuisine and wine. Small streets are very interesting. Visit the Ethnographic Museum, and galleries in the library Vitezich in Vrbnik. Koshljun island is also known as a cultural and historical site. In searching for adventure, the Biserujka cave is rich with stalagmites and stalactites. If you get there early in the morning or at dusk, you can see many bats . For sea-lovers, the aquarium in Baska is a great choice, with about 100 species of fishes. If you want an entertainment, go to Aqua park with exciting ski lifts, water skiing, wakeboarding, and other content. Explore the beauty, opt for a stay with the rich tourist and catering offer, and enjoy the beaches and marinas with blue flags Njivice, once a small fishing village, now is an attractive tourist location. Thanks to the Austro – Hungarian aristocracy, the tourism is developed here.
Malinska also slowly developed. Top of the development was the construction of the hotel city Haludovo. Hospitality is the main characteristic for Krk, and the results are numerous taverns and restaurants. Beginnings of nautical tourism are dating from 1964 in Punat.
